Exploring Color - Weaving - Susan Balascio

Exploring Color

At the heart of my artwork is the simple yet complex exploration of color and texture. I use traditional weaving materials as well as non-traditional materials such as paper, wire and natural and handmade objects to create images that evoke a sense of depth, space, time, and mystery.

Rhythmic & Organic

My work is influenced by the rhythmic and organic patterns found in nature as well as the precision of mathematically perfect geometric shapes.Using hand-painted warps and a variety of conventional and unconventional techniques and materials I explore layers of transparency and illusion and how they intersect within the two-dimensional plane of weaving to create ethereal landscapes.

Thoughtful Selection

The slow, deliberate process of weaving and working within the woven grid is comfortably constraining while simultaneously allowing me the room to stretch and redefine its boundaries in new and unusual ways. Thoughtful selection and placement of each thread expresses my interest in the interplay between the tactility of the fibers and the visual dimension they convey overall.
“Being creative is not so much the desire to do something as the listening to that which wants to be done: the dictation of the materials.” – Anni Albers
